Watching the Netflix documentary series “American Nightmare” reminded me how easy and dangerous it is for our minds to be taken over by a particular narrative. I find this very dangerous because, as portrayed in the documentary, once an overpowering narrative takes hold it filters how we perceive reality. These distorted perceptions then become the basis for what are deemed facts or hearsay, what is deemed important and prioritised or trivial and ignored. Eventually, they become the justification for action and inaction. It is then this action or inaction based on false or fictitious assumptions that can drive us into hurting other people.
